The History of Sultan Muhammad Fateh
Mehmed the Conqueror, also known as “Mehmed Fetihler Sultanı,” is one of the most famous figures in Turkish history. He is remembered for his military successes and strong leadership, especially during his time as the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. His most well-known achievement is the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, which earned him the title “The Conqueror” (Fatih).
Born on March 30, 1432, Mehmed II became Sultan at just 12 years old after his father, Sultan Murad II, passed away. However, because he was so young and the political situation was unstable, he gave the throne back to his father for a short time. In 1451, after his father’s death, Mehmed took the throne again. His early training in leadership and military strategy helped him prepare for one of his greatest goals: capturing Constantinople.
Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, had survived many attacks over the years, earning a reputation as a city that could not be taken. But Mehmed II was determined to succeed where others had failed.
In 1453, after careful planning, Mehmed led a large military campaign to conquer the city. His army used advanced weapons, like huge cannons that could break through the city’s strong walls, and a navy that blocked the Bosporus Strait. After a 53-day siege, Constantinople finally fell on May 29, 1453. This victory ended the Byzantine Empire and made the Ottoman Empire a major power in both Europe and Asia.
