The History of Osman Ghazi

Osman-I had a close relationship with a local religious leader named Sheikh Edebali, whose daughter he later married. According to a story passed down by later Ottoman writers, Osman had a significant dream while staying at Sheikh Edebali’s home.

In the dream, a moon rose from the Sheikh’s chest and settled into Osman’s own. From Osman’s navel, a tree grew, and its branches spread to cover the entire world. Under its shade, mountains appeared, and streams flowed from the base of each mountain. People drank from the streams, watered gardens, and made fountains flow. When Osman woke up and shared the dream with Sheikh Edebali, the Sheikh interpreted it, saying, “Osman, my son, congratulations. God has granted you and your descendants rule, and my daughter Malhun will be your wife.”

After securing his northern borders by reaching the Black and Marmara Seas, Osman shifted his focus to the southern areas of his beylik. He launched attacks on Byzantine towns, villages, and fortresses near the city of Yenişehir, preparing to conquer it. Osman led a large campaign to capture the fortress of Yāvandhisar, successfully annexing it. He then moved on to Yenişehir, capturing it with ease, and made it his temporary capital after reinforcing its defenses.

Following this, Osman launched more campaigns against other Byzantine cities, capturing several key fortresses, including Lefke, Akhisar, Koçhisar, Yenicehisar, Marmaracık, and Köprühisar. The purpose of these conquests was to create a security belt around Yenişehir by surrounding it with fortified positions to prevent any potential invasions.
